With love,

Madras

With Love, Madras takes us on a stunning visual journey through homes across the city that embody the Madras way of life — a unique blend of modernity rooted in tradition, authenticity, and slow living. Through a thoughtfully curated volume of 20 homes, architects Ashna Lulla and Vignesh Sivakumar explore the city, traversing its neighbourhoods, architectural typologies, family dynamics, and each homeowner’s personal aesthetic.

Get acquainted with 87-year-old matriarch Lily Vijayaraghavan, who has dedicated her life to collecting brass antiques and Mah-jong. Or get transported to the lush backyard of the Jacobs’, who spend their evenings watching a panoply of fireflies.

Together, these homes could easily form a mood board of the city itself: unassuming, authentic, and steeped in cultural legacy. Their restrained sense of taste is deep and rich, distinct from other Indian metropolises that put a premium on expensive contemporary design.

The city may have long since become Chennai, but Madras remains a way of life.

We hope the book inspires you to tell your unique story through the architecture of your home, the materials used, the greenery that surrounds you, and the things you collect as your lives unfold and your homes evolve.
